MEMORIES

I'am writing this from San Jose, California where I have lived since 1982.

However, I was a Calderbank girl and attended St. Aloysius primary from 1954 to 1960.  While there my best friend was Anna Brennan, who emigrated to Canada in 1960.  Recently, through the wonders of internet, I have been back in touch with Anna.  We now correspond frequently through email.  Neither of us has been back in Lanarkshire for many years.

St. Aloysius School

St Aloysius primary is a Roman Catholic co-educational primary school serving the Chapelhall area of Airdrie. The school has football, netball, athletics and writing clubs. The netball team is coached by parents, whilst the other clubs are taken by school staff.

Every opportunity is taken to involve the school in the local community. The Community Police, Fire Service, lollipop ladies, local library and our senior citizens are invited into school to speak to the children and sometimes to be entertained by the children. A fund raising week is held during Lent to help children be aware of the needs of others less fortunate than themselves.

The school also takes part in the yearly quiz run by the district library service. We are very grateful for the considerable support received from parents, friends and staff for the training and practical help given.

Many parents volunteer some of their time to work with the children or carry out some of the many tasks that make a school a better place for the children, eg computer work, organising resources, storytelling or helping on excursions. We have an active Parent Teacher Association, which is always happy to have new members working for the school. The AGM is usually held in the first term of each school year. The PTA usually meet on the first Monday of the month.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Aloysius primary normally transfer to St Margaret's High.
